Building NEXOF is organised through an open contribution process that has different channels.
At the level of Research, NESSI has defined 3 main different profiles: the NESSI Strategic Projects, the NESSI Compliant Projects and the Invitations to Contribute.
Any project, existing or to be created, can come in and propose to be compliant. Existing Projects can also evolve towards become Strategic, in coordination with the NEXOF Process.
As for the Invitations to contribute, 2 invitations have been already issued, one in July 2008 with over 100 contributions from all over the world (China, America and Europe) and 8 investigations teams and one in February 2009.
After the successful completion of the 1st Invitation to Contribute, NEXOF-RA issued the second invitation to Contribute.
The invitation closed on 17/03/2009.
The process was totally open, and participation easy. To participate you needed to:
REGISTER before February 23rd, 2009
Register your intent to submit a position paper and participate to the Investigation Team. A specific web page on the project portal was dedicated to this purpose (http://www.nexof-ra.eu/register_in_topics ). Once registered, you could be contacted by one of our project members to discuss your participation. Participation was open to all motivated parties, including individuals, organizations and project consortiums.
SUBMIT before March 17th, 2009
After registration, submit a position paper describing in a few pages your background in the domain as well as a summary of your intended contribution (your actual contribution is not expected at this stage). The position paper could be as long as required, but must contain a summary not exceeding 4 pages in case the document were longer. The papers submitted didn't have to contain any confidential or proprietary information. Instructions on how to submit the position papers were available on the dedicated section of the project portal (http://www.nexof-ra.eu/open_construction_process ).
PARTICIPATE on March 23-24th, 2009 and on June 5th, 2009
After reviewing all the position papers, the project issued invitations to join the Investigation Teams. The kickoff meeting for the Investigation Teams was held in Brussels on March 23rd and 24th. The Investigation Team created input which will be used as a basis to contruct the Reference Architecture according to the approach described in the document “Definition of an architectural framework and principles” available on the NEXOF-RA website. Effective participation required the following: attend face-to-face meetings, participate to phone conferences, actively engage in email discussion on the topic, perform off-line investigations or research, and co-author sections of the document. You were requested to keep the same representative through the duration of the activity. The Investigation Teams were expected to complete their work by June 5th.
