Call for short position papers

The NESSI Semantic Technologies Working Group is pleased to launch a call for short position papers to all WG members and organizations interested in contributing to our WG. A template has been distributed with the guidelines and the form prepared to collect the expertise and research interests of your organizations. After gathering this information we will prepare a short summary with the mapping of interests and expertise that will help all of us in many ways (roadmap of the group, future research, new proposals, etc.).

The idea is every organization to produce a very short paper following the instructions and the format given in the attached document. Hopefully it will take you very little time. The deadline for sending this position paper to the WG leaders is 21st of November 2008.

Please click here to download it.

WG Conference Call

A conference call of the WG took place the 4th of November. We did not discuss the semantics of the American elections , but the process to revise the roadmap of the WG and the possibility of detecting new research lines and gaps in the current research areas.

A F2F meeting has been planned in parallel to the Semantic Wave conference in Madrid (10-14 December).

Please, click here to download the minutes of the 4/11 conference call.

Future of Internet Symposium

The NESSI Semantic Technology Working Group  held a special workshop in association with the Future Internet Symposium in Vienna on Tuesday, 30th September from 14.00 - 16.00. Santi Ristol from ATOS Origin chaired the sessions. Presentations were made by John Domingue (SOA4All, a NESSI Strategic Project), Bernhard Schreder from Austrian SME Hanival, Patrick Gatellier (THALES), and Tomás Pariente (ATOS Origin). Semantic Technologies and Ontologies Working Group

The European Commissions' Software and Service Architectures unit have announced the formation of a Semantic Technologies and Ontologies Working Group chaired by Prof John Domingue of the UK's Open University. The NESSI Semantic Technology WG is in discussion with this group regarding future collaboration.

24 May 2007
Activity plan - 24 May 2007
The objectives of this working group are:
·         Identify the research and implementation challenges and opportunities in the area of semantic technologies as relevant to NESSI’s strategic research agenda;
·         Develop and publicise a view as to how those challenges and opportunities should be met by the European software industry;
·         Create and maintain a roadmap describing the likely evolution of semantic technologies, and thereby provide a framework within which key research and implementation challenges can be identified and met.
The principal activity in the year 1/4/07 – 31/3/08 will be the production of a document incorporating an initial roadmap for semantic technologies and initial recommendations for R&D and uptake of semantic technologies. A first draft is scheduled for 30/6/07 and a first issue at 30/9/07.
The documents will be produced through a series of meetings and online consultations with members of the working group.

Working Group Presentation

NESSI Semantic Strategic Project

SOA4All is a NESSI Strategic Project with semantic technology at its heart. SOA4All's stated objective is to realise a world where billions of parties are exposing and consuming services via advanced web technology: while service orientation is widely acknowledged for its potential to revolutionize IT by abstracting from the underlying hardware and software layers, its success depends on resolving challenges in the areas of scalability, dynamicity, heterogeneity, distributivity and openness not handled by today's SOA technology. These are the challenges SOA4All will address.

Context

During the last half decade there has been very significant progress in the development of semantic technology worldwide, both in the standardisation of languages such as RDF and OWL by the W3C and in the creation of commercial organisations to exploit the technology. There remain significant research and implementation challenges.

NESSI has identified Semantics as a key technology domain, specifically stating that:

Semantics will be a key element for the transformation of information to knowledge. Semantic Web technology based on ontologies will enable far more effective machine to machine communication about the nature and the manipulation of data they hold and actions based upon that data. On the business process level, business modelling provides the semantics that is required for business process management, process transformation and inter-company cooperation. In a knowledge-based economy, learning and knowledge management finally will have to converge to a work place utility

Scope

This working group will:
-        Identify the research and implementation challenges and opportunities in the area of semantic technologies as relevant to NESSI’s strategic research agenda;
-        Develop and publicise a view as to how those challenges and opportunities should be met by the European software industry;
-     Create and maintain a roadmap describing the likely evolution of semantic technologies and thereby provide a framework within which key research and implementation challenges can be identified and met.
