Working Group Presentation
Context

NESSI identifies the adoption of Service Oriented Business Models as a fundamental shift that is necessary to change the European economy into “the world's most dynamic and competitive knowledge-based society”. This paradigm shift manifests itself by the evolution of business models from the sale of products to the provision of electronic services”, where services are seen as utilities that can be used but that are not owned by users. In terms of IT technology, this shift translates into the evolution of implementations by software development into “solutions built by composition and configuration of software services”. In spite of current approaches supporting this vision, such as “Component Frameworks” and “Service Oriented Computing”, it is well recognized that “there is a need for [novel] ways of producing applications by configuration and composition of loosely coupled services” [1]. This is the challenge addressed by the proposed working group.

Objective and Scope

The focus of the working group is on the engineering of services and on their integration and composition into [composite] new services and business processes. At a very high level, the area includes the development of highly, configurable and adaptable, compos-able services (component service layer), the construction of an integration layer for the composition and orchestration of component services into business processes (service composition layer), and the description and management of distributed business processes (process layer), – see Figure 1. Two kinds of topics that are across the three layers are of special interest for the group: (1) methodologies, tools and techniques that support the design and run-time phases, as well as the management of services, compositions and processes; and (2) the study of different features that concur to a comprehensive definition of services, such as their policies, transactions management, and run-time monitoring mechanisms.
