An article in Science¦Business reports new analysis finding that H2020 is extremely competitive, and more and more good proposals are being rejected.The sucess rate in FP7 was 18.5%, but in H2020 is 11.6%.

According to its own interim evaluation the EC would need to spend an extra €62.4 billion to fund all the research proposals evaluated as high quality.

More than 30,000 proposals are now being submitted to Horizon 2020 per year, up from 20,000 during FP7.

The study presents the findings of the monitoring tool on data workers, the value of the data market, the number of data user enterprises, the number of data companies and their revenues, and the overall value of the impact of the data economy on EU GDP. The findings will feed into further developing the Digital Single Market in the EU as data is a catalyst for economic growth, innovation and digitisation across all economic sectors, particularly for SMEs and start-ups.

A contractual PPP bringing together industrial and public resources would focus on innovation following a jointly-agreed strategic research and innovation roadmap. It would make the best possible use of available funds through better coordination with member states and a narrower focus on a small number of technical priorities. It should leverage funding from Horizon 2020 to deliver both technological innovation and societal benefits for users of technologies (citizens, SMEs, critical infrastructure), as well as provide visibility to European R&I excellence in cyber security and digital privacy.

The European Commission adopted the communication on the data-driven economy as a response to the European Council's conclusions of October 2013, which focused on the digital economy, innovation and services as drivers for growth and jobs and called for EU action to provide the right framework conditions for a single market for big data and cloud computing. This Communication, published on the 2nd July, describes the features of the data-driven economy of the future and sets out operational conclusions to support and accelerate the transition towards it. It also sets out current and future activities in the field of cloud computing.
